I had just turned thirty and was feeling my personal air of invincibility quickly dissipating. Unlike my youngest two children, who would be brought into a new family by the time I turned thirty, I had no intention of returning to my hometown of Dallas, TX. Instead, I started making travel plans to live in Chicago, IL. I had been working in the IT department at Apple for almost four years. Apple was, and still is, one of my favorite companies, and the people I worked with were a great bunch of folks. (I was the one with the PhD in computer science….which wasn’t nearly as impressive as I thought it was.) I got the exciting job of managing a small, but important team that was responsible for all the server side apps used by all the Mac users on the network. In my downtime, which was, and continues to be, a bit thin on the ground, I did some reading and other thought-provoking work. One of the books that I devoured was called The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell. Malcolm talked about how things are seen (or perceived) to be inevitable or inevitable only after they hit the tipping point. The Perceiving Brain suggested that every mind is drawn to a natural equilibrium and that “we easily mistaken real danger for real danger.” I know now that I was not the only one who had a desire to leave the Dallas area behind. I was fortunate to be based in Chicago and was able to get a better paying, more interesting job in my chosen field. In the meantime, life settled into a routine that included family, friends and a lot of reading. My youngest two children each came into the world during this time period (at the beginning of the year and end of the year, respectively) and brought with them a new set of challenges and joys. The challenges included a college freshman and a high school freshman, new surroundings, and new friends. The joys included new experiences in music, sports, driving, the family dog, new jobs (for me) and a strong church life. A few weeks ago, I downloaded and listened to an album by a Seattle band d0c515b9f4
